What is the Real Number System?? Think of any number …. ANY NUMBER. That number is part of the Real Number System. Every single number in the ENTIRE UNIVERSE is part of the Real Number System.
Defintion: The Real Number System is the set of all rational and irrational numbers. Every single number is either rational or irrational but can never be both. Irrational Numbers are the set of all non-repeating, non-terminating decimals. Irrational numbers can NOT be written in fraction form. Rational Number are numbers that can be written as the ratio of two numbers. Rational numbers always terminate (they end) or repeat. Rational numbers are broken into 3 subsets. Integers are a subset of the rational numbers that do NOT include fractions or decimals. Whole Numbers are a subset of the integers that do NOT include negative numbers. Whole numbers include zero. Natural Numbers are also called counting numbers. Natural numbers are a subset of whole numbers that do NOT include zero. |
There are several ways you may see the Real Number System represented. Here are three diagrams, each one showing how the Real Number System is broken into subsets.
